Malaysia take away (backpackers in action again): how to organize a low cost travel to Malaysia (Peninsula and Borneo)

Temple - Melaka by Raffaella di Iorio Photography

Ok guys, let’s have a look to my last 3 weeks – low cost travel. Hope to be useful for those who want to discover a place – marvelous and wild – where people smile, the islands are like heaven and the nature is huge: Malaysia
If you want a trip mixing nature (and adventure!), beach, art, cities, diving and trekking, this low cost itinerary – I designed by myself – would be a very good option:
Day 1 – Flight Qatar Madrid – Doha / Doha – Kuala Lumpur (KL)
Day 2 – KL
Day 3 – visit to Batu Caves (close to KL)
Day 4 – Malaka
Day 5 – Malaka and trip to Jerantut
Day 6 – from Jeranatut to the jungle: Taman Negara (Kuala Tahan)
Day 7 – Taman Negara (the worst day of my life)
Day 8 – train trip from Jerantut to Kota Bharu
Day 9 – local bus trip from Kota Bharu to Kuala Besut, ferry Perhentian Islands (Pulau Kecil)
Day 10 – Pulau Kecil
Day 11 – Pulau Kecil (trip back by ferry and bus to Kota Bharu in the afternoon)
Day 12 – Flight Kota Bharu – KL – Kuching (Sarawak, Borneo)
Day 13 – day trip to Bako Park (jungle), afternoon in Kuching
Day 14 – flight Kuching – Miri – Mulu, to get to Gunung Mulu National Park
Day 15 – Gunung Mulu
Day 16 – Gunung Mulu
Day 17 – Gunung Mulu and flight Mulu-Miri-Kota Kinabalu (Sabah)
Day 18 – Flight Kota Kinabalu – Sandakan  (visit the surrounding) then flight Sandakan – Tawau. Minivan trip Tawau- Semporna (Sabah).
Day 19 – Semporna, PADI (theorical part) with http://www.Scuba-junkie.com
Day 20 – Sibuan Island, PADI (practical part)
Day 21 – Mabul Island, corso pratico (practical part)
Day 22 – Bus trip to Sepilok. Night walk in the jungle at Sepilok Orang-utanes rehabilitation center (Sandakan)
Day 23 –  daily visit to Sepilok Orang-utanes rehabilitation center (Sandakan)
Day 24 – Flight Sandakan – KL
Day 25 – KL and then flight KL-Doha (sleeping in Doha)
Day 26 – Flight Doha – Madrid
This trip is a backpack trip: a lot of km walking a part of trains, taxis (shared with other people), private cars (autostop….), minivans and a lot of low cost flights. The total cost for one person is around 2200 euros, including 900 euros for the main flight (from Spain to Malaysia) and a PADI course (250 euros). It’s a 24 days trip (I don’t count the last day) so the cost is approximately 43 euros per day (sleep, eat, fly, drive and pay daytrips). You can decide to have a very lower budget if you want as this country offers you the possibility to sleep for 2 euros per night.
I will post more about this travel, as to explain details.
